Unlearning:
This project is centered around my family history, focusing on my father. Within these photos, I explore how the decisions my father made before I was born have had a lasting impact on my life.
Not in the Picture, 2018
Jasmine’s mother’s hand is holding the only “family photo” that exists of her mom, dad, and herself. The finger covering his face is a figurative phrase turned visual by omitting Jasmine’s father out of the picture.
Glossed Over, 2018
Jasmine’s dresser has lots of clutter, but each object holds its own importance. Most things evoke fond memories of good friends and happy times. But Jasmine also keeps a glossy photo of her father in the mix just to remind herself that who created you does not define who you become.
Mental Straight Jacket, 2018
This oversized tee shirt is one of the few things Jasmine owns that was once her father’s. The shirt itself is soft and comfy, but the thought of being enveloped in her dad’s memory creates a rigid mental straight jacket.
Settled, 2018
Jasmine’s father died in this garage. Instantly upon viewing, anyone could feel the disturbing energy this place harbors. Everything about this environment is slightly off-kilter, creating uncomfortable tensions and anxiety.
Bare Nails, 2018
Here, Jasmine is holding a 15 year old bottle of fingernail polish. When he was still alive, Jasmine’s father had no clue how to connect to his daughter. However, he knew that she loved PowerPuff Girls and Jessie the Cowgirl form Toy Story. Any gift he ever got her fell into one of those two themes.
Where Tears Fall, 2018
One day when Jasmine was going through old birthday cards she had collected over the years, she found this letter from her father to her mother tucked away.
When Tears Fall, 2018
Bloodshot eyes and a red nose are the easiest ways to tell how Jasmine’s mental health is doing.
Forgottn, 2018
Jasmine’s name is included on her father’s headstone along with his two other children, but it’s misspelled.
